School purchases instruments PTA,
grant helped to attain funding

By LORYLL NICOLAISEN/Democrat staff Writer

Sunday, September 26, 2004 - Music classes at Freeman Elementary School sound a little bit sweeter thanks to seven shiny new instruments.

A grant given by the Apple Tree Foundation gave Freeman $1,000 to put toward new instruments if the school could find a way to match funds. With an additional $1,000 from Freeman PTA, the school now has three flutes, two clarinets and two coronets to add to its musical library
.

"It's really great to be able to have this," said Jana Rhoades, who teaches instrumental music to Freeman and Beamer Elementary students.

Freeman fifth and sixth graders get to reap the benefits of the new instruments.

Anesthasia Ganz, 11, said she likes playing her new clarinet. "My old one didn't work well and the keys would get stuck together," said the sixth grader.

Fifth grader Chevy Petersen said he's excited to practice on one of the school's new flutes. "The other ones were all messed up," he said.

Rhoades said the new instruments are a good use of grant money because the instruments will remain at the school for years to come. "This is something that a number of students are going to be able to use," Rhoades said. "It's an investment. This is not a short-term kind of thing."
